Event Description

The California African American Museum (CAAM) is pleased to announce the exhibition “Toward Freedom,” a photo exhibition that features Ethiopian communities in Los Angeles and Jewish Ethiopians in Israel. Curated by photojournalist Irene Fertik, “Toward Freedom” opens on October 1, 2015 and will be on view through January 3, 2016.

The photo exhibition depicts the social, cultural and technological adjustments that can produce hybrid identities. With photos spanning 20 years (1992-2012), this collection serves to highlight the growing community of Ethiopians in Los Angeles, while also contextualizing the emigration of East-African peoples through the lens of religious acceptance.
